Well what a weekend! After 3 months of rain we were thinking we were going to have to create a boat race around the region rather than a bike event! But after a careful planning and logistical meeting with John Lloyd Racing the show went on!!
Saturday saw the Vitus Road Sportive and after a heavy night of rain the riders village and start line was a place of nervous anticipation as countless roadies turned up to give it there all in some of the most scenic road riding for miles around. There are some unexpected hill climbs which really tested the riders and all came back with tales of satisfaction of what was a challenging afternoon for conditions, as the roads were more suited to hovercrafts then skinnys!
We then packed the pub in the evening with our indoor grill firing out the BBQ steak and pork and chicken steaks and the rain stayed away for everyone to finally enjoy some fresh air and a well deserved pint as local band ‘The Nuclear Weasels’ kept the crowds entertained!
For the Main Event, and after last years amazing weekend of 30 degrees we were blessed again with a healthy day of sunshine after the 12hr downpour of friday. With much whisperings of the fun and frolics that may lay ahead, just under a 1000 riders descended on the local area, a mass array of differing bikes and specs scattered the site as the start line started to take shape. With three distances the whole event is approachable for all levels of MTB cross country riding.
Due to the rather harsh weather conditions leading up to the event and the challenging terrain the recorded times were slightly slower than in 2011 with the 1st rider of the short course coming over the line after 1hour 43min in the saddle. From there onwards there was a constant flow down the finish shoot. After conquering the last few meters of trail the riders received their event T-shirt and a warm welcome of the crowd. The flow of riders would carry on till the last rider crossed the line to complete the long course in a time of 8hours and 34mins. Thats a whole day at work people!!
We are already looking forward to next years event as this is the CRC’s most popular event and the course is regarded as the one that has all the features to enjoy with some of the most stunning views of England and Wales.
From Us it was so nice to have so many of you here enjoying our facilities and it would be a pleasure to welcome you anytime as our site is open all year round, so you can come and enjoy the local surroundings with your bike and stay or visit for the day at anytime! Our Pods are very Comfy!
