The BEL is a nationally recognised award that allows people to
* Lead groups in lowland areas – below 600m
* Be responsible for the care of others in the outdoors including day journeys
* Organise base and mobile camps
The BEL award is now the minimum qualification required by many Operating Authorities offering D of E Award scheme – it is required to train and lead groups for the expedition section of the Bronze & Silver awards. The award doesn’t qualify people to lead groups in remote or mountainous areas. The course is 90 hours (normally 4 weekends) of instruction and practical work. Post-course content requirements are that candidates log 30 hours of leadership experience.
