Santa Cruz have just released news of their new women specific range of bicycles under the name of “Juliana Bicycles”.
To start with there will be a four bike line up (Nevis, Origin, Joplin, Furtado). The range will include a hardtail, 650b and a 29er.
Furtado Primeiro. 650b trail ready machine. Featuring kashima coated Fox 32 Float 130mm and Shimano XT drivechain. Comes in two spec models Segundo and Primeiro
Joplin Primeiro. Carbon 29er full suspension bike, benefits from Santa Cruz’s Virtual Pivot Point (VPP) suspension design. Comes in 3 different spec models – Terco, Segundo and Primeiro
Nevis Primeiro. Designed for the smaller rider. XS frame comes with 26inch wheels, wheras the S and M come with 29inch wheels. Comes in the Segundo and Primeiro spec range
Origin Primeiro. The original ‘Juliana’ model. Also designed for smaller women with frame sizes available in XS-M. The XS frame features 26inch wheels whereas the S and M both come with 29inch. Available in two spec ranges Segundo and Primeiro
The range was initially devised in 1999 through a collaboration with former Olympic mountain biker Juliana Furtado and Santa Cruz Bicycles and resulted in the first ever women-specific mountain bike ‘Juliana’. Today it has evolved to become the largest range of mountain bikes dedicated to women.
Designed with female-geometry in mind the range comes equipped with Juliana women-specific saddles and slimmer handlebar grips to suit smaller hands. Bar, stem and crank length are also tailored to the rider’s height to improve fit.
First impressions of the bikes seem very promising. Far from taking the shrink and pink approach, it’s a welcome relief to see high-end, trail ready bikes built for the more experienced female rider.
